The Last World War Empty The Last World War

Post  Mizo Wed Jan 04, 2012 3:08 pm

It is the 6th of June 1944. The world holds its breath as soldiers move into place like pieces on a chessboard. Fear grips the heart of every man, woman and child. Woe suffocates humanity as it destroys itself. War is upon us. The sky is grey, indifferent to the desires of man. The sea is relatively calm as silent warships slice through the gentle waves. Soldiers stand shoulder to shoulder in tiny landing boats, together huddled in bunkers, gripping their parachutes as they ascend to jumping altitude, marching dutifully towards battle. The generals and leaders sit in silence, the enormity of the situation and the multitudes of lives they hold in their hands are not lost on them. The first shots are fired, the first bombs dropped, D-Day had begun.

______________________________________________________________________

Jack swayed with the waves, leaning against the cold metal of the landing boat. Everyone was silent except for a few whimpers of fear and regret. Land was in sight, the sounds of bombs and gunshots reverberated across the sea, it was almost time. Jack's grasp around his rifle tightened as he closed his eyes, remembering all he was fighting for. That is when the machine guns began their onslaught. The bullets ripped holes through the landing boat's forward defense, the sound of the bullets zipping passed his head filled him with terror, but not as much as the sound of the bullet tearing through the skull of the man stood next to him. The man dropped to his knees and was quickly passed to the back of the boat towards the medic. It occurred to Jack that the medic would have to be pretty damn good at what he does to save a man who just took a bullet to the eye. He wiped the blood that had spattered across his face from the man's wound and hunkered down, trying to avoid the enemy gunfire. There was a ominous lurching sound that meant they were about to beach.

"This is it, good luck men." Spoke a senior officer at the front of the boat in a quiet voice, as though he knew wishing the men luck meant nothing.

There was a crunch and then the front of the landing boat fell open. The horror of the battle field came into full view. The roaring sound of machine gun fire and planes overhead deafened Jack as he lunged onto the beach without a second thought. Keeping his head down he pelted towards one of the iron crosses the Germans had deployed to hinder the allies. Bullets pinged off the metal flicking out sparks barely inches from Jack's face. He looked back to the landing boat to see the majority of the men dead, the senior officer who had wished them luck was ebbing backwards and forwards with the waves, water rushing over his fatal wounds. Jack looked along the beach to see similar devastation, men lying dead before they even had the chance to get into cover. He held his rifle to his chest and peeked his head around the iron cross, spotting a German bunker he aimed down his scope. The soldiers inside had spotted him to and were currently aiming right at him. He only just managed to pull his head back before the bullets rained down. It was hopeless, he was pinned down with no where to run. He slumped against the cold iron and looked up to the grey sky. The clouds began to swirl in a way Jack had never seen before, as though the sky was stretching a wispy finger down to earth to stop the bloodshed. Lost in the peaceful awe of the clouds Jack only managed to notice green blobs falling from the sky at the last second. They crashed into the beach kicking up the sand. It looked as though they had fallen across the whole beach, even some on the cliffs. There was one not to far from Jack and he watched it intently. Was it some new technology the Nazi's had perfected or some secret trump card the Allies had created? The green goo began to melt away revealing a large metallic ball. The ball twitched. Slowly eight limbs protruded from the sphere and it lifted itself up from the ground. It towered above Jack. A light flicked on, like an eye on the underbelly of the sphere. It began to spin independently of the limbs as though the eye were scanning the battlefield. Suddenly it locked on to a man in a similar position to Jack and raised two of its long, thick limbs. There was a moment of silence before a deafening boom. The limbs turned out to be some kind of weapon and they had obliterated their target. The beach was engulfed with new screams of terror as Jack saw the spider like machines gunning down Allies and Axis alike. Soldiers were firing at the machines, but the bullets seemed to hit an invisible wall and fell useless to the ground. Just as Jack thought things couldn't get any worse there was an eery whirring sound that permeated the devastation. Strange planes burst through the clouds and fired what looked to Jack like green fire down upon the beach. Jack caught sight of a group of soldiers that were in the path of the green fire, the men appeared to be melting. Once again holding his rifle to his close to his chest, he took a deep breath, bracing himself for a dash to safety.

The skies above London darkened and as a thick blanket of trepidation was draped across its broken, burnt and scarred cityscape its citizen's hushed. They were well accustomed to the atmosphere before an attack from the skies. The clouds swirled in a violent dance, spitting out the green globules that came crashing down to the earth. The green substance melted away revealing the spheres of the walkers. The ominous whirring of the alien flying craft echoed through the streets. The city was once again aflame, burning with the embers of an invader. In one of the nicer and less affected areas of London Anthony Walker-Price and his party witnessed the descent of the alien army. Their privileged location did not spare them from the horrors as the building and those around them came under heavy fire. Large shells ripped through the brickwork and exploded inside the rooms rather than at the initial collision with the walls. Hundreds were killed within minutes. This was shock and awe at its most shocking and awesome. Anthony was right in the middle of it. How will the bird without wings escape?

____________________________________________________________________

All across the world similar scenes of devastation were taking place. Every city across the world was being decimated by an unknown force from the skies. Factories, workshops and military establishments were being destroyed with ease by the seemingly immortal aggressors. None of man's weapons were working, the invading force shrugged off bullets and rockets alike. Nothing could stop their relentless onslaught. It was clear war had truly begun, war like man had never known before.

Bullets flew over and into the makeshift barricade that was shielding Leon as he reloaded his rifle. Deafening booms sounded from the mortars lined up along the beach as conflicting commands were being bellowed down the lines. Leon took a deep breath, shouldered his rifle and swung round to face the devastation and destruction that lay before him. He noticed a group of British soldiers who had managed to get close to the German lines, planning to break through and take out his comrades from behind. He popped off five shots, killing three and fatally wounding another. It wasn't until he noticed the wounded soldier trying to crawl towards the Germans, screaming for help, that he noticed the strange machines landing on the beach, taking out countless soldiers on both sides. Their mechanical legs would raise and with an ear-splitting boom they would take out yet another person.

Leon didn't know what the hell was going on, he had been prepared for war, accepted that he could not get out of it but this was entirely different, these machines were ripping through both sides of combatants, doing more damage than either side had done with an entire army. He did the only thing he could think to do, he fired and emptied a full clip into one of the walkers before realising that the bullets had bounced straight off. As the other troops around him began to notice what was happening the turned and ran, shouting and screaming. If they had stayed where they were more of them would have been spared. As it was the flying machines suddenly swooped in and rained death upon anyone who had managed to gain enough control of themselves to run away.

The walkers were advancing up the beach, blowing away the giant iron crosses that had been planted across the beach, bodies were being thrown through the air and men screaming in agony replaced the sound of gunfire. The flying enemies had Leon and the few soldiers who had not run trapped in their slapdash bunker. There was nowhere to run to...

Adalwolf lay still watching Omaha beach through his scope, he watched the men run into direct machine gun fire as the waves turned red with the blood ripped from the innocence of youth, however his face was still. He watched as men cried for there mothers miles away hoping to take away the pain, his face was still. He witnessed a unusual sight as a man knealt down and prayed for his life as bullets whizzed past for what would appear to be devine intervention. However fate had something much worse in mind, as Adalwolf adjusted his scope and aimed slightly to the right of his target, as the wind demanded, the mechanical monstrosities hurled to the ground and within seconds the man on his crosshair was destroyed almost instantly.

With the screams now to a new height Adalwolf's face was gripped with fear. These.... things, were destroying Axis and Ally alike, no hesitation just annihilation. He and his spotter observed as the beach changed into an unimaginable sight, the day had gone from War, to extinction.

What has become of this battlefield? Is this the red army? Only they could gain from attacking everyone here, what ever it is they are unstopable.

Ignoring the whimpers of his spotter, someone Adalwolf refused to take the time to acknolwedge the name of, he aimed for one of the metallic juggernaut's eyes, as he assumed this would be a weak spot. Taking a deep breath and once again judging with the wind pressure and all the comotion he fired. As soon as Adalwolf recovered from the recoil the machine had located him, calculated and fired. The blast hit the earth beneath him and his spotter and he was launched several feet. With groggy vision and a deafening ring in his ears Adalwolf pushed the remains of his former spotter off himself , and stayed low to observe Omaha beach the sight was chaotic, Adalwolf then slipped away but to only realise that this wasnt a precise point this was on a global scale he saw these things plummet to the earth in every direction, some crashing into the countryside, some into the allied ships sinking them on impact. One thought now crossed his mind.

Run!

Adalwolf abandoned the front and headed to a nearby woods to collect himself, it was filled with bunkers for the defence and he hadnt seen any of the things plumet to the earth there, he recouperated in a bunker he dared not even produce any form of light, he was trained to sustain situations of not moving or making a sound for hours, but this would be no mere hours it would be forever if he were to stay here, he had to get somewhere safe. He clutched his rifle and began to realise more and more the situation he was in.

Once i have my breath then i will move inland. There will be some one there.... There has to be"

In the near darkness the earth shook. Not one person could clearly see another, but the smell and uncomfortable heat made it clear the small compartment was crammed full of people. Yakov had tried to speak to those who shared his plight, but none could understand him, he faced his fate alone. The dread hung thickly in the air chocking away any sense of hope leaving all with a desolate emptiness. For days Yakov had prayed that the doors shutting them in their small metallic room would once again open, and yet part of him wished they would stay shut and shielding them from the horrors waiting outside.
Yakov was not sure how many days had passed, when the unpleasant scraping of metal on metal signified there journey was at an end. Light flooded the small container temporary blinding all inside. Yakov felt very suddenly the cold feeling of iron against his head as hands roughly seized him and dragged him from his sleeping space pulling him hands and knees first onto the harsh ground below. Disorientated and weak Yakov could do little but blindly follow his captors in the direction he was being shunted. Eventually his vision began to creep back and he tried to discern some of his surroundings. He could make out armed guards, dogs, watchtowers and in the distance the gates of a prison camp, or maybe something worse. The chocking feeling of dread was creeping back now, his eyes darted around desperately seeking some means to escape. His legs seemed unwilling to keep moving forwards. As Yakov passed under the gate he felt a wave of panic grip him and felt an urge to simply try to run and see how far he could get. The German guards around him were now dividing the prisoners into two distinctive groups. Yakov found himself amongst a group of men of a similar age to himself, a wave of relief was beginning to emerge unbidden to Yakov. He now understood why he had been divided into his subgroup. He looked over to the other group and felt a sickening wave of guilt. They were made up of mainly sick men women and children and he could only imagine what fate awaited them.
Without warning Yakov was upon his knees coughing and spluttering. He had picked up an infection days earlier in the train and cursed his luck as the illness chose to reveal itself in present company. Pulling out a ragged handkerchief, Yakov quickly attempted to stifle the cough hiding himself amongst the crowd, but it was too late. The Nazi guards had already seen and were now shouting in German and advancing towards him. Pleading and cursing in his own language Yakov attempted to steady himself against their advance. And a struggle ensued. Suddenly an intense pain erupted across the left side of Yakov’s his face and felt his mouth begin to fill with blood. He fell back spluttering and coughing. Looking up he saw a guard stood above looking down upon him. The guard’s sidearm, covered in blood, was pointed directly at Yakov’s head, his expression was thick with hatred. Yakov closed his eyes ready for the oncoming oblivion.
The shot never came, Instead the air was suddenly filled with the sounds of screams of agony. Yakoz opened his eyes once again and was greeted with an image of hell. The guards had been covered in a strange green liquid and were crumbling away before him. Scrambling forward Yakov grabbed a fallen sidearm and began shooting at his captors. The guards barely noticed him or the other prisoners now fleeing back through the gate but were instead transfixed with horror as the prisoners “liberators” swarmed over them. Only now could Yakov see the multitude of strange metallic objects floating across the camp destroying its defenders with ruthless efficiency. Many had already begun to flee. One determined guard remained at his post firing his machine gun at a nearby vessel seemingly unaware of the bullets harmlessly colliding with midair a few meters from the target. A single shot returned from the vessel smashing the guard into a thousand pieces. Pocketing the gun yakov took off after the other prisoners, fleeing from the horror engulfing the camp and its defenders

((I might change this abit tommorow... Haven't slept for 27 or so hours....But for now))

Anthony wasn‘t concerned to begin with. One minute he was sipping brandy and chasing a blonde thing around the dining room, the next they were stood by the window watching in disbelief as fire, green and toxic appeared to be raining from the Heavens. But it was too far away surely? The problem of the crawling masses in their two up, two down hovels. His apartment was too expensive, the sheer luxury of the place would buffer him from the attack.
The dread only sunk in when they began to hear screams from the street below, the siren’s wails over London. Was it an experiment? Frightening, dangerous German technology? Something small and silver smashed through the window and rolled onto the carpet like a discarded ball. All they could do was stare aghast and bewildered before it exploded in a flurry of brick and glass.

Anthony’s eyes flickered open, his vision obscured by a bloody red mist, a whining, tin-like ringing in his ears. He struggled to push the debris from his body which was now bruised and marred by bleeding wounds. Despairing cries echoed in the air, the room strewn with the dismembered and damaged bodies of his friends. They were all dead, everyone. They looked like rag dolls, disjointed limbs twisted into unnatural, disturbing positions.
He crawled across the floor slowly, shredding his hands on broken glass the cacophony of panic was still going on outside. They were still out there, those things. Exhausted and in agony, it took Anthony a good half hour to cross the corridor to the bedroom but he’d managed to stand on his own two feet and that was at least, a small victory. He retrieved his handgun from the bedside table and his rifle from a chest under the bed, slinging it over his back. He’d have no choice but to turn in at barracks, they’d expect him there and chances are, they’d know more about what was going on.

As he opened the front door, his ears picked up on a noise his subconscious had been aware of the entire time but up until now had ignored. A weak, mewling sob, rattled and raspy from the corner of the room. It came from a guest, still clinging feebly to the vestiges of life. When he registered another’s presence , his eyes became wide, desperate. Though choked by blood and tears, it was clear he was begging for help. Rooted to the spot, Anthony’s conscious began to wrestle with his sense of self-preservation.

“I’m really, very sorry.”

It was barely above a whisper and probably inaudible as the door clicked shut behind him.
